GOVERNMENT has identified Latin America as a source of obtaining cheaper food products, which can be purchased by importers at one-third of what they now pay.
This was the word from vice chairman of the People’s National Movement John Donaldson yesterday, following a General Council meeting at Baliser House in Port-of-Spain.
“I know, with respect to certain items the Ministry of National Security used to import when I was there, when we sought alternative sources, it was ten per cent of what we traditionally paid.”
Donaldson said on Tuesday the Minister of Legal Affairs, Peter Taylor, will address the Senate and the nation on rising food prices.
“It is amazing research indicated that in some countries in Latin America, the very products that we import from traditional sources can be sourced at one-third of the price.”
Donaldson said the Government, however, was not in the business of importing food.
“Business people do that. I am sure when they realise they can get things a lot cheaper in other areas they will plan to suit.”
Asked if the Government would make a recommendation to importers to shop in Latin America, Donaldson said all this would be revealed in Taylor’s address.
“Although, he (Taylor) is being abused for some of the things he said and I noticed the Prime Minister is coming under attack too. But you will understand that some people have a good thing and we are happy for them.”
